Governments scrambled for resolutions, while businesses looked for short and long term staffing solutions. Many companies chose to send their employees home to work remotely, while others fought to remain open. Unfortunately for many Americans, a large number of businesses began furloughs and layoffs. All in all, the year 2020 was turbulent and has changed the work landscape forever.

As businesses have recalled workers back the office, they have faced backlash and disgruntled employees who have seen the advantages of working from home. Many did not want to return to the office and chose to end careers in favor of starting out on their own. According to the US Census Bureau startups rose from 3.5 million in 2019 to 4.2 million in 2020, equaling a 24% increase.

Here we are at the end of 2021 and the startup trend is not slowing down. Millions of people are continuing to turn away from traditional careers and focusing on their own success. As the business world continues to change and adjust to the new climate the pandemic has created, startup trends have emerged. I recently read an article, Startup Statistics (2021): 35 Facts and Trend You Must Know, by Artem Minaev (https://zurl.co/QCFa ), which has some interesting statistics and facts about startups across the globe.

We all know that 9 out of 10 startups fail within the first year, 20% of those fail the following year, with 30% failing in the next year and so on. Reaching the 10 year mark is an accomplishment, but one that is hard fought as the roadblocks are many.

Finances will always be a struggle for small businesses as they navigate the difficult decisions of re-investing in the company and driving business. It is becoming more and more clear that technology needs to be at the forefront for small businesses. Investing in these technologies has to be important for growth and sustainability, especially when these businesses are fighting against the conglomerates with the resources to out-compete small businesses.

However, no code and low code software continues to be the shining light in this fight for dominance. Small businesses have a greater ability to pivot and change direction quicker with the use of technology. Giving them an advantage as the needs of consumers change over time. Low code makes this easier by giving these businesses tools that are affordable and easy to use. Small businesses now have access to the same tools that the larger enterprises are building themselves. Low code offers the framework of software that is customizable and dynamic for each individual business. Simplicity in software is important, so is cost – especially for small businesses working to be part of the 1%.

As time continues and more startups enter the marketplace, these businessmen and women need to consider how they will invest their capital. Technology HAS to be a main focus for businesses to compete. The technologies available make it easier for these small businesses to succeed, but they cannot be afraid of the investment costs of software. The long term solutions that they offer can be the difference between success and failure. Further, the initial cost is less prohibitive than it has been in the past. Low code software tools have everything that small businesses need to ensure that they have a place in the market.

Data is king, and businesses that track relevant data and use it to make good decisions are the ones who are successful. Businesses should be taking advantage of all of the available data to create key performance indicators (KPIs) to track the success or failure of business initiatives. These metrics provide valuable feedback to allow businesses to compare and contrast current results with the past, ultimately giving them a better view of the future.

KPIs work best when they are developed based on a company goal or initiative. They use quantitative analysis to understand where the business currently stands, and how a change has impacted that business over a period of time. For example, a business might have 10 sales managers generating $100k in sales revenue each month. With a goal of increasing revenue by 50% the company adds 5 new sales managers. The business knows that prospective clients are out there, but their sales managers cannot reach all of them because the workload is too heavy. Mathematically one would assume that by adding an additional 5 staff members, the revenue would follow and go up by 50%. However, this is not always the case, and the business will need to determine why the revenue is not coming in at the expected rate.

KPIs give that business an opportunity to identify where the shortage in revenue is coming from despite the increase in staff. The business can develop software to track how many leads are generated, how quickly they are followed up on, which managers are turning leads into sales, how much lead time is needed, what sales approach customers are more receptive to, and many other factors that could have an impact on sales growth. By identifying the results of each action, the business is able to more accurately pinpoint roadblocks and develop a plan to course correct. It is in this course correction that businesses succeed. KPIs provide usable data, but it is up to the business to take that data and use it to make decisions that will make an impact.

Sometimes it is as simple as comparing sales growth before and after a marketing campaign, other times it requires out of the box thinking. With the abundance of information available on the internet, businesses are no longer limited by the data generated within their organization. There are thousands of websites that gather tons of data for almost every industry. They can tell you what types of consumers are purchasing products similar to yours, how they are using those products, and the advertising that drove their purchases. Web sites can tell a business how many of one product was sold, who it was sold to, how much it was sold for, and how long it took to sell.

The information is out there and available to anyone who is willing to look for it. Getting that data is the first step in creating a KPI, the second is incorporating that data into software solutions that give that information relevance and value. Solutions can analyze data, compare it with other information, and in some cases isolate data that is specifically relevant to your business. The key to the success of data and KPIs is the relevance it brings to an individual business. If the data can be used as a tool to measure success it has unlimited value as the business can make the right decisions and focus on growth.

How will you use KPIs to take your business to the next level?

Remembering to follow up with current clients, potential clients, and employees can become overwhelming, along with all of the day to day operations. Small things start to slip through the cracks where they can easily be forgotten or overlooked. It’s a lot of pressure to keep all of the wheels turning and not missing a beat. In other words, being a business owner is exhausting.

As the work keeps piling up, it becomes more and more stressful and overwhelming to keep juggling all of the business’s operations. Not to mention, the pressures and responsibilities at home. Spending time with family and friends, enjoying hobbies, taking care of ourselves, and taking care of our homes are all important facets of life that should not be overshadowed by business. However, too often our personal lives get put on the back burner in favor of squeezing in a few more hours at the office. But how productive are those hours?

An essential component of running a small business is finding a method of remaining organized and keeping track of all of those tasks. When your business is small you can rely on programs like outlook calendars to keep track of your appointments, excel spreadsheets to keep track of expenses, and Hootsuite to monitor social media. But what are you using to keep track of all of the tasks that need to be completed?

It doesn’t seem important when there are only one or two tasks in a day, but as you grow and begin to serve more customers the number of tasks that need to be completed each day, week, and month continues to grow along side it. Further, you might begin to outsource some of those tasks to employees and business partners as you continue to grow.

So how do you ensure that all the tasks are being completed without turning into the dreaded micromanager? Project Management task trackers. We highly recommend looking into this type of software that can offer your company an easy method of tracking the progress of a project without the added cost of a full time project manager. Further, you will save yourself from becoming the boss who only ever asks “Are you done yet?” Give access to your employees and empower them to complete tasks on their own and to update the tracker as necessary. Now you can check in on the application and know exactly where your team stands.

A good project task manager will give you the ability to assign tasks to individuals, give them timelines for completion, and have tasks reoccur every day, week, or month. The more automation you build into the platform the better off you will be in the long run. Automation works to eliminate the physical tasks that you have to complete over and over. Making you more efficient and giving your team a more consistent work environment. Do some research, see what task managers can do for your business.

In other words, you should purchase software A because it fulfills 80% of what you need, and then return to the software hunt for software B, C, D, and E which give you the rest of the features that you really need (and a bunch of features that you don’t).

The article compares this type of purchase with buying a car. Stating that a car has one basic function (getting you from point A to point B) and then you can add additional features that you might want (air conditioning, seatbelts, rear-view camera, etc.). Their argument is that you will be purchasing the car for its nuts and bolts because it fulfills that basic need and that alone is a sufficient enough reason. However, now that you have the car you can add air conditioning, rear-view camera, and all of the other features separately to customize the car to your specifications.

As I was reading, I couldn’t help but think that this is such a preposterous (and outdated) way of looking at software. Why would I buy something that only does part of what I want? Could you imagine buying a car that did not have seatbelts and having to buy them separately? No? Me either. Although seatbelts are not the main feature of a car, they are an important safety feature.

For example, someone living in Alaska might not need AC in their car, but for me, living in Florida I would die in the heat without it. However, that same person in Alaska would want heated seats, which I would consider unnecessary. (Although they came standard in the last car I purchased). Why would we be purchasing the same car when it doesn’t fully fit the needs of either of us.

Now I hear you saying, “who cares about extra features, just don’t use them?” And I agree with you to a point. In the car scenario you are right. I never turn the heated seats on, and I never turn my AC off, not a huge inconvenience and definitely something I can live with. But software is a different thing. Especially when the number of unnecessary features becomes overwhelming, or they interfere with the features you really want to use. There is software where you can’t even use the feature you want without using the features you don’t, or you can’t easily access the features you want because of all the extra clutter. Further adding to this difficulty, is that you have to add additional software to the original solution. If each added software has five unnecessary features and you need five additional software, you now have twenty-five features that are not being used.

Taking this analogy further, have you ever bought a car with every feature that you wanted? In most cases the answer is no. There is always some compromise somewhere. Maybe it is not the right color, maybe it doesn’t have automatic headlights, or maybe it’s not as fuel efficient as you would like. Somewhere along the sales journey you have made a compromise on your purchase and got 90% or less of what you originally wanted.

Stop settling for software that only does part of the job, or that has so many useless features that it becomes cumbersome and impossible to use. In the long run you are creating more of a headache and nuisance for yourself and your employees.

Instead, we need to demand all of what we want by utilizing custom software solutions. Businesses need software that is going to separate them from the competition by engaging their customers, empowering their employees, and most of all making their lives easier and more productive. The only way to fully achieve this is through software that is built specifically for that business. Software that is straightforward and efficient.

This includes small and medium size businesses who have limited resources to begin with. Imagine spending a hefty amount on software thinking that it will make your small business more efficient and prosperous, then you find out that it doesn’t do everything that you need it to. And the only remedy is to spend more of your hard earned money on additional software that will supplement the one you have already purchased. At what point do you compromise and settle for software that is incomplete? When do you step up and demand software that is built for your business needs?

Technology trends, including the increasing availability of low-code software, APIs and Web Services have given businesses of all sizes the ability to re-evaluate their software solutions and to fight for software that does 100% of what they need 100% of the time. This is the new trend, we as business owners need to focus on. We need to stop settling and fight for what we need.

In the world of technology, application integration is the coexistence of two separate processes that are linked together to perform better. Each application feeds information from one platform to the next, creating a dynamic link where expertise is shared.

A business might have 3, 4, or even 20 different software applications that each specialize in a different business function. A CRM or Customer Relationship Manager would keep track of sales leads and customer preferences, a Sales software keeps track of the amount of product sold, expected revenue, and issue invoices, while a Marketing software would create marketing material, launch social media and email campaigns, and track their success. Each of these applications serve a necessary function for the business, but they can become more insightful and helpful when they are linked through application integration.

For example, a marketing campaign deployed by the Marketing software could lead to newly generated sales leads which become a part of the CRM database. Once a product is sold to the new lead, the Marketing software needs to be updated to indicate that the marketing campaign was a success. Additionally, the Sales software would be updated to reflect the increase in revenue, the Inventory Management software needs to be updated to reflect the decrease in inventory, and so on. Essentially one action from one software can have a rippling effect across all the applications the business uses.

Here is another example of how an online shoe business would use integrating applications.

Each of these business processes are completely separate and require their own specialized software to work through their processes, one to track how much inventory the business has, and one to track the sale and how much money they have made. However, they must also work together. If a pair of shoes sell, then the inventory level goes down, and the sales revenue goes up.

Long ago, when computers did not exist (yes, there was a time when computers did not exist), the shop owner would write down what pair of shoes sold and for how much. At the end of the day, they would take out their spreadsheets and calculate (in their heads, because calculators did not exist either) how much money they made. They would also use a different spreadsheet to track which pair of shoes sold and calculate how much inventory they have left. Now this would happen for each pair of shoes sold, and the shopkeeper had to be meticulous to not make a mistake.

But this tracking still happens in two separate software applications, much like the spreadsheets. However, with application integration it is possible for the two applications to continue their calculations and tracking processes while sharing information with each other.

In today’s market it is essential for businesses to integrate their software to be as efficient as possible. Applications that lack integration are more prone to errors, as data is manually moved from one application to the next. Data entry by humans as they translate information from one system to the next can lead to typos and missed information. Additionally, data entry takes time and can lead to costly delays.

Application integration solves this problem, by allowing the different business applications to talk to each other and share data. Using our previous example, we can see how the data is shared between the Sales software and the Inventory Management software. When a customer buys a pair of shoes, the sales application records the amount of sale, who the customer is, and where the shoes are being shipped to. This information is sent to the inventory application that removes the pair of shoes from the available inventory list, places an order from the manufacturer to restock the store, and creates a shipping label for the shoes to be mailed to the customer. All of this happens simultaneously and without human intervention.

But applications that “do it all” don’t always do it well. Out-of-the-box software and software that tries to complete too many different processes can become complicated and require more human interaction to maintain and control. However, software that is specialized in one aspect of the business is more reliable and consistent. You wouldn’t hire one person to be your accountant, marketing specialist, and lawyer, in much the same way you wouldn’t use a word-processing software to create a spreadsheet.

Software that specializes in one aspect of the business provides the same expertise and dedication that an accountant or lawyer would. Having one application to control each part of the business, exactly how it should be controlled is essential to success. Adding application integration takes this one step further by allowing these applications to talk to each other and share their data. Now, both applications are running at peak performance for their expertise with the same information, making the business even more successful.

Simply identify the field you want, drag it onto your form and away you go. Forms are what holds your data and where you put all of the information that you will use to create your reports and other data tracking methods. Typically, you can import data from a spreadsheet, or you can manually enter the data yourself. You can create workflows that are designed to initiate tasks after data is entered, edited, or deleted. You can create reports and dashboards that display this data in helpful ways, all without writing a single line of code. The low code or no code platform, holds all of the HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or other programming language that defines the layout and functionality of your software application.

All of this is pretty simple, and something that I would highly recommend to any business that is trying to simplify their processes. Use these platforms to give your business better access and flexibility to your data. It is worth it. On Google, you can find plenty of reviews and commentary on the different no code or low code platforms available, at CM2 Software we use and recommend Zoho.

However, there are limitations, especially if you are not a programmer. If you have never written a line of code in your life, you are limited by the drag and drop capabilities and pre-written workflows of low code or no code platforms. You will be able to create beautiful reports and collect all of your data in one place. But you might be missing out on the added benefits that a software consulting service would be able to offer.

What if you wanted to know the exact traveling distance from one location to another, would you use Google Maps? What if you wanted to know the current day’s exchange rate for USD (US Dollars) versus GBP (British Pound Sterling), would you know where to find this information without manually updating the data daily? How would you be able to incorporate this data into your new application? If I told you that you could use an API to find this information, would you even know what that means?

I don’t ask these questions to belittle because the truth is, that I don’t know the answers either. But CM2 Software has software developers who do.

There are many consulting services (CM2 Software included) that use low code software and take it to the next level by integrating APIs and developing code that allows the application to talk to itself and outside sources in new and dynamic ways. They are able to create reports that dynamically change based on inputs, search the web and gather data from all different sources, integrate applications across multiple platforms, and customize all solutions to your business’s specific needs.

Could a developer do all of this without using low code software? Yes. But it is significantly more expensive and time consuming.

They would need to create all of the back end code and structure for the application before they even begin the process of customization. Think of a simple application like MS Word (yes, I picked this example as I write this post on Word), a developer created code that defined the size of the application, created the blue header, defined the tabs, created all of the buttons that change the formatting, view, and design. Someone developed code to identify how many lines can fit on one page before moving to the next, how large the font is, the style of font used, and how each change would effect the entire document. The scroll bar was designed to be dynamic and grow with the page as you write. All of this and so much more had to be visualized, designed, and written in multiple programming languages before anyone could write a single line on a word document. Further, one tiny error in the thousands of lines of code (as small as a missing period, or capitalization of a word) could cause the entire application to fail.

Low code removes all of this back end work for the software developer. Now they can focus solely on your application, on the customizations that you need to be successful, and do it all in a timely and cost effective manner. To me, it is a no brainer, low code platforms work – and if you are willing to invest the time into learning how to use it, you can have great success. Consulting services and programmers make low code even better, faster, and more intelligent. The possibilities of software are only limited by imagination.

I recommend that you take the time to look at low code software platforms, sign up for a 30 day trail, and see how easy they are to use. I found the one I wanted, put it in my cart, and hit the checkout button. After placing my order, I checked my bank account to verify that the payment came out properly.

This is all a pretty normal transaction that I might make every day, and I’m not alone. Millions of people make similar transactions every day. As I sit here and wait for my package to arrive in the next few days, I realized how many times I had, unknowingly, interacted with a mainframe system, just for this one water bottle purchase.

It dawned on me that most people do not recognize that there is a backend system to the majority of the transactions we make every day. In fact, most of us don’t think beyond clicking the checkout button. But how do the majority of businesses run their back end systems? With a mainframe. Many consider this technology to be antiquated and obsolete, but it continues to power the billions of transactions we make every day. According to IBM, “nearly 80 percent of the world’s corporate data resides on or originates from mainframe computing platforms.[1]” However, the average person doesn’t even know what a mainframe is, never mind, how many times they are actively interacting with one.

So, what are mainframes? When the mainframe first came on the scene, they were huge machines, taking up an entire room. These monsters had immense processing power and memory, allowing big business and financial institutions to harness this power and create immense databases of information. Typically written in COBOL, the mainframe contains software that allows these heavy-duty processors to provide up to date accurate information used for making business decisions. The mainframe of today maintains this incredible processing power, today mainframes handle 30 billion business transactions each day[2]. That is a lot of credit card payments, stock trades, ATM interactions, and other critical business transactions.

30 billion transaction EVERY day is a lot of information flowing to and from mainframes each second. Large banks would not have the processing power to reliably handle this volume of data without the incredible power of the mainframe. Software company, Micro Focus put it succinctly, “They [mainframes] are the systems of record, the number crunchers, the power behind cloud and mobile transactions. Mainframes monitor processes for fraud, perform real-time analytics, and many more functions – and all simultaneously.[3]” Mainframes do more than just crunch numbers, they also offer protection for our valuable personal data for each of these transactions that we are a part of. Mainframes offer incredibly fast data calculations that help to prevent fraud. Today, much of the banking fraud that occurs requires delays in data processing. However, the incredible speed of mainframes makes this impossible for possible fraudsters. Mainframes scan data for discrepancies so quickly that they are able to eliminate the lag in data processing, making your transaction that much safer.

What does all of this mean for the average user? Not much. People will continue to be oblivious to how their transactions are actually being processed every day. The mainframe is not going to be talked about at the next office party. No one is going to think twice abut hitting the checkout button on their next online purchase. However, it is reassuring to know that big business continues to use these legacy systems that work to keep our personal information safe.

[1] Norman, Levi.
